Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and is a major cause of adult disability. About 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year. Be sure to know the signs and symptoms of stroke, so you can be prepared to take quick action and perhaps save a life.
Signs of Stroke in Men and Women

- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech.
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination.
- Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone else has any of these symptoms.
American Heart Month Resources from Million Hearts
February is American Heart Month. This year, Million Hearts is encouraging Americans to know their blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. In fact, the roughly 70 million Americans who have high blood pressure are four times more likely to die from a stroke and three times more likely to die from heart disease. High blood pressure often shows no signs or symptoms, which is why having your blood pressure checked regularly is important.
